Thomas Greer stood. “Turn that off.”
Mara looked at him. “Sit down, Mr. Greer.”
Adrien’s eyes locked on my wrist.
The bracelet was gone.
His face changed as he understood.
“You recorded me.”
I looked at the empty place where the diamonds had once sat.
“No, Adrien. You did.”
His mouth parted.
“The bracelet had a security tracker,” I said quietly. “Your security tracker. Your microphone. Your people installed it because you never trusted me.” I leaned closer. “You gave me a chain, and I turned it into a witness.”
A sound came from the hallway.
Then another.
Heavy footsteps.
The glass doors opened, and federal agents entered the room.
Senator Walsh stood so quickly his chair struck the wall. Dominic covered his face with one hand. Thomas Greer went pale.
Adrien did not move.
He stared at me as if seeing me for the first time.
“You planned all this,” he said.
“No,” I replied. “I survived long enough to use it.”
An agent approached him. “Adrien Romano, you’re under arrest.”
The words should have satisfied me.
They didn’t.
All I felt was a terrible, quiet grief for the woman I had been—the woman outside the lounge door, waiting for love from a man who only understood possession.
As they turned Adrien toward the door, he looked back at me.
For one brief second, his mask cracked.
Not with love.
With fear.
“What happens to me now?” he asked.
I thought of chandeliers. Bourbon laughter. The cold sentence that had freed me.
Then I gave him the truth he had given me.
“Life goes on, Adrien.”
He was taken away.
The next morning, every newspaper in Manhattan carried his name.
But mine appeared above his.
CLARE MERCER ROMANO ASSUMES CONTROL OF ROMANO HOLDINGS AFTER FEDERAL ARREST.
People called me brilliant. Ruthless. A survivor. They said I had played the perfect long game.
They were wrong.
The real twist was not that I owned the company.
It was not that I had the evidence.
It was not even that the bracelet he used to control me became the weapon that ended him.
The real twist was that I had loved him enough to almost let him keep everything.
And that was the one thing Adrien Romano never understood.
A woman can stand outside a door and hear that she means nothing.
She can smile for cameras while her heart turns to ash.
She can walk out with one small bag and no promise that the world will be kind.
But when she finally stops begging to be valued,
she becomes the most dangerous person in the room.
