Wheeler kept talking, faster now. The notary journal mattered. The entry claimed Sarah appeared at 9:42 a.m. with a passport. The thumbprint box was blank. A handwritten note described a nervous female signer, which would have been interesting if Sarah had been anywhere near that kitchen, that notary, or even the country in the timeline the documents claimed.

David and Michelle Parker were in the lobby crying.

That part hit Sarah harder than she expected.

They had painted the nursery room pale green. They had changed the locks, planted herbs in the backyard, and believed they were beginning a life in a home Sarah had never agreed to sell. Jake had not only stolen from his sister. He had used strangers’ hope as wallpaper for his crime.

Jake reached for the folder.

Sarah stepped back.

It was a small movement, but everyone understood it. For once, she did not hand him the evidence. For once, nobody could call her difficult and make the truth disappear.

On speaker, an agent asked Wheeler whether Sarah Morrison was present. Sarah answered before anyone else could speak.

“I’m here.”

The agent’s voice came through calm and precise. He asked whether she had signed the power of attorney. She said no. He asked whether Jake Morrison had any authority to sell her home, speak for her, or receive funds on her behalf. She said no.

Then came the question that made the room go airless.

“Ms. Morrison, did you receive any proceeds from the $300,000 sale?”

Sarah looked directly at Jake.

“Not one dollar.”

Jake started talking then. Too fast. Too loud. He told everyone to calm down, said things were being misunderstood, said Sarah had been stressed and conversations had happened and family helped family. But his words sounded thin now, like cheap paint over rot.

Within forty-eight hours, the sale was frozen. The title insurer opened an investigation. The county recorder flagged the deed. The Parkers were allowed to remain temporarily while ownership was untangled because Sarah insisted on it.

She would not punish David and Michelle for believing documents that professionals had accepted. They were victims too, even if they were standing inside her stolen house. That was the thing Jake had counted on no one remembering, that fraud did not only wound the person whose name was stolen.

It spread.

The investigation moved through every artifact Sarah had saved. Travel documents. Call logs. Closing emails. Mortgage notes. The forged power of attorney. The notary entry. The blank thumbprint box. Every lie that had looked clean under dinner-table lighting looked different under federal review.

Jake’s story collapsed in stages.

First, he admitted he had arranged the buyers.

Then he claimed Sarah had verbally agreed.

Then he blamed stress, family pressure, and bad advice from people he refused to name.

None of it fixed the signature.

None of it explained the money.

Some of the $300,000 had gone toward debts Jake had hidden from everyone. Some had been used to patch what he called family obligations, as if stealing from his sister became noble if he scattered the damage around. Some still sat in an account under his control, waiting for the lie to harden into normal life.

The next week, Sarah’s parents came to see her at a friend’s house where she was staying until the legal mess became safe enough to enter. Her mother brought soup in a plastic container. Her father brought apologies that circled the truth like a nervous dog afraid to come inside.

Sarah listened from the porch while the evening cooled around them.

Her mother cried and said she had only wanted to believe the best in her son.

Sarah looked at her, exhausted in a way sleep could not fix. “Believing the best in Jake required believing the worst in me.”

Her mother had no answer.

That silence hurt, but it was honest.

In the months that followed, the deed was voided through legal process. The title claim protected the Parkers, and eventually David and Michelle found another home with help from the insurer. Sarah hoped the nursery in that house turned out even brighter than the one they had painted in hers.

When Sarah finally returned to her own house, the locks had been changed again.

She stood in the entryway with the new keys in her hand and breathed in the strange, familiar quiet. The rooms looked almost like they had before, but not quite. There were faint marks where strangers’ furniture had rested, a different smell in the hallway, and pale green paint in the second bedroom.
