Frank spoke first.

“Mrs. Bennett, with respect, have you ever run a manufacturing company?”

One board member looked down.

“But Harold spent three years teaching me how to listen, how to read numbers, how to recognize bad leadership, and how to keep a promise. I know that is not the same as experience.”

I placed a folder on the table.

“That is why I am not asking you to pretend I know everything. I am asking you to help me protect what Harold built.”

Patricia leaned back. “And what exactly do you think is wrong with the company?”

“Derek,” I said.

No one moved.

Then I opened the folder.

“Revenue is down twenty-three percent over two years. Client complaints have tripled. Employee turnover in production has increased by forty percent. Two major clients left after missed deadlines and quality failures. Supplier terms worsened because invoices were delayed. Morale is low because Derek rewarded loyalty to him instead of competence.”

Frank’s eyebrows rose.

I continued.

“Harold built this company on quality, delivery, and trust. Derek treated those principles like old-fashioned decoration. We restore them, or the company keeps bleeding.”

Patricia’s expression changed.

Just slightly.

“What is your plan?”

I handed out copies.

“Ninety days. Full audit of current projects. Immediate outreach to lost clients. Quality control review. Promotion review for internal managers Derek ignored. Search for an experienced COO. Weekly board oversight. Transparent reporting.”

No one spoke for several seconds.

Then Frank looked at Patterson.

“Did Harold write this?”

“No,” Patterson said.

Frank looked back at me.

I held his gaze.

“I had a good teacher.”

By the end of the meeting, they voted unanimously to recognize my role.

Not because they trusted me fully.

Because they trusted Harold enough to give me a chance.

That was enough.

The next months did not feel like victory. They felt like labor.

I arrived at seven every morning and left after dark. I walked the factory floor until my feet ached. I learned the smell of machine oil, hot metal, paper invoices, burnt coffee in break rooms. I learned which supervisors inspired respect and which inspired silence. I learned that the quietest employees often knew the most.

I hired Robert Chong as COO.

He had thirty years of manufacturing experience, calm eyes, and the rare ability to explain complex systems without making me feel small.

“You ask good questions,” he told me during our second week.

“I ask basic questions.”

“Basic questions expose expensive assumptions.”

Under Robert’s guidance, we rebuilt processes Derek had neglected. We called clients Derek had offended. I apologized without excuses. Some hung up. Some listened. A few came back.

One client, a woman named Elaine Mercer, toured the factory in April.

“I expected you to be decorative,” she admitted while watching a production run.

I smiled. “Because Derek described me that way?”

“He described everyone that way eventually.”

“Then let me earn a better description.”

She gave us a small contract first. Then a larger one.

By summer, orders began rising.

By August, employee turnover had slowed.

By September, the factory floor sounded different. Not easy. Not perfect. But alive.

I raised wages for the lowest-paid workers before the CFO approved of the idea.

“These programs cost money,” he warned.

“So does mistrust,” I said.

We created a profit-sharing program. Then scholarships for employees’ children in Harold’s name. Then flexible schedules for working parents. The first scholarship recipient, a machinist’s daughter named Lena, cried in my office when I handed her the letter.

“My dad said Mr. Bennett used to walk the floor and know everyone’s name,” she said.

“He did.”

“You do too.”

That night, I cried in my car before driving home.

Not from sadness.

From the strange ache of becoming someone you once needed.

Derek pleaded guilty in October.

Four years, eligible for parole in three.

The divorce finalized the same week.

When Patterson called to tell me, I stood in Harold’s old office, looking out at the factory lights.

“How do you feel?” he asked.

I waited for an honest answer.

“Free,” I said.

Derek’s mother, Carol, asked to meet me two weeks later.

We sat in a quiet café downtown. She looked older than I remembered, her elegant clothes unable to hide the exhaustion around her mouth.

“I owe you an apology,” she said.

I stirred my coffee once.

“Yes.”

She flinched, but nodded.

“I knew about the affair. Not everything, but enough. I told myself it wasn’t my place.”

I said nothing.

“I also knew Derek could be cruel. I thought marriage would mature him. I thought Harold was too hard on him.” Her eyes filled. “I was wrong.”

The old Simone might have comforted her quickly.

The woman I was becoming let the truth sit.

Carol reached into her purse and removed an envelope.

“I found this in Harold’s storage unit. It has your name on it. It was written years ago.”

I took it.

The paper was yellowed. Harold’s handwriting was steadier than it had been near the end.
